Stölzl Blanket - Indigo

In 2019, as part of the Bauhaus centenary celebrations, Wallace Sewell was commissioned to design a new edition of Gunta Stölzl's original 'Preller blanket'. The project was initiated by Jörg Klambt, the founder of the design workshop at the Bauhaus Dessau, where the first Prellerhaus blankets were produced in the weaving mills in 1926. As the original design has been lost, Wallace Sewell has realized and recreated the design with the help of Gunta Stölzl's daughter Monika Stadler and archive drawings and photographs.

Gunta Stölzl was of fundamental importance to the Bauhaus weaving department. When the Bauhaus moved to Dessau, Stölzl, who was a master weaver, designed a ceiling for the student residences of the 'Prellerhaus'. The original is a bold interplay of horizontal and vertical, positive and negative.

Through textile detective work, Emma and Harriet analyzed an existing photograph of the original blanket. Sketches and color swatches were followed by more detailed design development, carried out by hand on small looms in our studio, before being woven to scale at a weaving mill in Lancashire.

The Wallace Sewell Prellerhaus quilt is as close as possible to the original, echoing the rhythm and simplicity of Gunta's design. Wallace Sewell has also designed four new colorways that maintain the tonal balance and design of the Bauhaus while updating to a more contemporary color palette.
